"Why are all these women married?!' - The Trunchbull Nov. 9th, 2009 @ 05:23 pm
[info]marauderthesn
I finally, finally caved in and got Facebook, and found out that a whole bunch of girls from my class got married. Seeing as we all went to college and this is the year we're 23/24, I would have expected a few but not this many. There are a couple of babies as well. While I don't begrudge anyone their marital and maternal happiness, this is A) totally surreal and B) somewhat frustrating because I'd bet a hundred bucks that Mr. Marauder and I have been together longer than every single one of them has been with their husbands. By the time we finally, finally get married, we'll have been together for nearly ten years. We first started talking about getting married when I was sixteen and he was eighteen. (We both fell hard and fast, what can I say?)

Here is a rough timeline of our relationship:

October 5, 2002: Marauder goes on her first date with the sweetest and most adorable boy in the whole world.
October 2002 - early June 2003: Marauder and Mr. Marauder go to neighboring schools and are in high school theater together.
June 2003 - August 2003: Summer. Marauder spends some of it in Scotland performing in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
September 2003 - early June 2004: Marauder is still in high school while Mr. Marauder goes to college in a neighboring state.
June 2004 - August 2004: Summer. Mr. Marauder is home.
August 2004 - May 2008: Marauder goes to college halfway across the country and sees Mr. Marauder at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and summer. Referred to as "the Brokeback Mountain years."
June 2008 - August 2008: Summer. We're both home.
August 2008 - present: Marauder, having no viable means of income, goes to law school while Mr. Marauder works on finishing his undergraduate degree.

This is madness, people. The only couples who are together this long without being married are either gay or people who don't want to get married in the first place. But alas, we not haz moneys.

And ideally we want to have our first baby when I'm twenty-nine, so that means only a few years of being married without kids. Don't get me wrong, I love babies and I'm thrilled with the idea of having them, but I'm thinking maybe we ought to have them one right after the other so that we can be empty nesters as soon as possible...

When you describe yourself as 'anti-consent', you've pretty much failed squared Nov. 9th, 2009 @ 05:59 pm

A group of past and present University of Sydney students set up a ''pro-rape'' page in the sports and recreation section on Facebook, describing themselves as ''anti-consent''.

Anti-consent. Because that's so much better than pro-rape, naturally.

The list of allegations is pretty sickening as well, but hardly surprising if this is the sort of place to spawn a Facebook group like that. The fail is astounding.

I'm not sure if I feel more angry or sick. It's probably a tie. UGH.

Happy birthday to [info]schmoo999 and happy belated birthday to [info]softrock.

I saw one of my best friends from school last night. I hadn't seen her in ages and it was lovely to spend some time with her. Plus her fella is less of a drip than the others.

I haven't watched this week's Merlin but it looks like people were on the whole pleased.

Michael Jackson Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 02:04 pm
[info]shirebound
Mom and I just got back from seeing "This Is It", the documentary about the preparations for the Michael Jackson concerts that will never, sadly, be seen. We both absolutely loved it, and were extremely impressed with both how all the footage was put together and the talent (onstage and off). I've never seen any other concert films, or 'behind the scenes' concert documentaries, so I don't have anything to compare this to, but I'm very glad I saw it. I've enjoyed many of Michael Jackson's songs over the years without being an out-and-out "fan", but I honestly had no idea how talented he was, or what we lost.

I judge this documentary solely on what was on the screen, not MJ's past or his eccentricities.

And on the way home, we stopped at a yard sale and I picked up some videotapes. Four for $1.00!

The Faculty (which I've only seen edited on TV)
The Good Son
Toy Soldiers (which I've never seen)
Raising Arizona (which you can't ever see enough times)

For the Fallen - Laurence Binyon Nov. 8th, 2009 @ 07:34 pm
[info]magic_at_mungos
For the Fallen

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres.
There is a music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncountered:
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables at home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end they remain.

Remembrance Sunday lets us remember the fallen. It's not about the rights or wrongs of the combat in which they fell. It's about knowing that there are families who have lost fathers and mothers, sons and daughters and brothers and sisters. The fallen don't choose to die.

Fic update: "Holding Back the Flood" Nov. 7th, 2009 @ 08:42 am
[info]shirebound
Yay, another chapter. Lotsa folks in this one... Boromir, Frodo, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Sam, Pippin, Boromir, Aragorn, and Boromir.

Thanks to [info]surgicalsteel for the always-excellent advice!

Story Summary: Frodo is safe in Rivendell, or is he? When one of the Nazgûl makes a last attempt to reach him, Sam, Legolas, and Gimli are also caught in his snare... and Elrond’s powers are tested to the limit. Book-verse, h/c, and plenty of hobbityness (of course). The canon timeline has been altered to allow Aragorn to play a major role.

Has anyone seen "This Is It" (the Michael Jackson rehearsal film)? I'm taking mom to see it on Sunday.

I've now had four of the six wrist-acupuncture treatments, and I'm not sure yet what to think of it. Some of the needles hurt when they go in (and some don't), and my hands tend to feel a bit 'bruised' for about a day after the treatment. I think there's a slight improvement in how my wrists feel, but I'll know for sure in the next few weeks. (Slowing down my fanfic writing probably is helping too.)

Speaking of fanfic, considering that Boromir was only supposed to make a cameo appearance in my next chapter, he's positively hijacked it. It's fun to speculate about when he didn't know the hobbits very well. I'll be doing some final editing this weekend. *bounce*

And finally... something pretty to look at.

Zen would be good this week.

Non-DoD Photo Zen
* It's too early to pontificate upon the Fort Hood massacre as the details are still emerging. That said, it's a tragedy, full stop, and what details are emerging are disconcerting on several levels beyond merely that it happened. Thoughts and prayers for the victims and survivors and their families would be welcome and this is a good time to link to TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors).
* Soldiers Angels is also putting together a response to the Ft. Hood shootings, but for the time being, I'm going to remind everyone that the Valour-IT fundraiser is ongoing through 11 November (and the Marines are cleaning the floor with the other services). Please consider donating.
* I've mentioned the documentary The Way We Get By before. PBS will be airing it on Veteran's Day.
* The Denver Post has an ambitious photo essay up, chronicling a young man from recruitment through his first deployment. It's not a straightforward path -- Ian Fisher has trouble adapting and trouble staying clean -- but it's a remarkable photo set.

First snow, missed BSG wank(?), Christmas wishlist and Africa's possible new sea Nov. 6th, 2009 @ 03:31 pm
[info]misscam

First snowfall this week. You can also see here. I like the snow, at least compared to wind and rain. Truly winter now, Norway. Get out your mittens and reflectors.

Did I miss wank in the BSG fandom? Because that secret and the comments make me think so (well, coupled with some deleted journals I've spotted).

If you haven't already, you can leave your address for Christmas stuff here. My address can be found here (if you're on my flist, at least).

My Christmas wish lists )

Or just something you think I would want ;)

Finally, Africa might be getting a new sea. Huh. Curious. Our world really is a world that keeps change, tectonically and otherwise.

Now I have weekend, marzipan and a new DVD with Marple stories. What's your weekend treat to yourself?

1. [info]yuletide sign ups have started. I'm still deciding on my fandoms. I have at least one given but I'm still deciding on the others. But this is one of my favourite time of the year.

2. Good grief. I feel like I spent all day in meetings today. But I did have lemon cake with my tea this morning. Nom nom nom.

3. Fireworks going off outside my window but am still dithering about going to a proper display. I'm going to be shattered tomorrow after work but will be out and about on Saturday. Maybe just looking at the pretty from my window with a glass of wine in my jim jams.

4. Went to see Fantastic Mr Fox. I was disappointed in it as an adaptation but as an animation, - it was very cool. It was light and fluffy but with some major fetish fuel for the furries.

5. *yawns* Thank fuck it's Friday tomorrow.

6. Is there someone on my flist good with layouts? If so, can you design me one and I will offer some kind of exchange. I feel like a change but don't understand stylesheets.

* Yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the storming of Embassy Tehran, which is a good a reason as any to flog Mark Bowden's remarkable history of the Iran Hostage Crisis, Guests of the Ayatollah. (A second excellent reason is that it's currently $6 USD at Amazon. It's very much worth the read even at full price.)

As per usual in Tehran, there were big demonstrations to commemorate the event. What was not usual was that many of those out in the streets were protesting their own government, not glorifying in the humiliation of the Americans. The protests are still going on, despite show trials and disappearances continuing as well. There's no imminent revolution, but that's not to say that things aren't changing.

* What's worse than being stuck at work with a cold? Being stuck at work with a cold and #%$@$# Yankees fans.

* Criminal Minds. Spoilers require no love for agar-agar. )
